The track record of a successful implant procedure is 95%, while this number is notable, some patients can experience complications they can experience if the factors below are not addressed with your dentist.
Dental implants can offer patients a permanent solution to missing teeth ailments. n order to obtain maximum results from dental implants, strong jawbone and gums are required for surgery. However, there are procedures and options to correct jaw and gum depletion such as bone grafting. While not comprehensive, here is a list of some of the standard qualifications that an ideal candidate will meet.
There are some patients who may have difficulty qualifying for dental implants because of a habit they partake in or even because of their age. While we have had plenty of success placing dental implants for patients who may not be the most ideal, the fact is that the chances of failure are higher for these patients. These patients include
For some patients, dental implant treatment can be a longer process than for others. The reason being is that these patients may be suffering from gum recession or jawbone deterioration – these conditions will hinder the success of dental implants. Two of the most commonly used procedures to treat these patients are bone grafting and gum tissue augmentation. Dr. Andrey Rossius is qualified in providing both treatments to patients who have gum recession and jawbone deterioration in their efforts to obtain dental implants.
If your jawbone has suffered extreme deterioration to the point where it can no longer support dental implants, you may need a bone regeneration treatment before the dental implant procedure. Bone regeneration removes a piece of bone from another portion of your body and applies it to the jawbone. Some of the places where this bone is removed can include the pelvis or a synthetic bone can be placed. Dr. Andrey Rossius will help clarify how much you will need to have grafted and the timeline of the process.
If you don’t have sufficient bone in the upper back jaw where an implant should be placed, then a sinus lift surgery may correct this problem. A sinus lift – also called a sinus augmentation- separates the membrane from the bottom of the maxillary sinus to the upper jaw to perform a bone graft(link). This process makes the jawbone thicker in order to support a dental implant. The implant will be inserted into the bone 6 to 9 months after the procedure when your jawbone has healed.
If you have deformities in the upper and lower jaw, then a ridge modification may have to be conducted prior to placing a dental implant. In this procedure, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose the bone defect. A bone substitute will then be placed in the defect to build up the ridge. A periodontist can provide different options for materials to help regenerate lost bone and tissue. This process can take 4 to 6 months from start to finish.
This procedure consists of a removal of tissue samples that are on the palate of your mouth and will graft them to the receding areas of the gums. As your gums heal following the procedure, this new tissue will be integrated into the old tissue, building up your gums to the point where they will be able to accept the placement of the implant fixture.
The exciting decision to repair missing or damaged teeth with dental implants is usually accompanied by the desire to start treatment right away. However, here at Wellness Dental Center, we encourage caution because not every patient is immediately ready for dental implant placement. Oftentimes, we see patients who are suffering from specific conditions that present challenges to dental implant placement. Luckily, we offer supplemental procedures that can help prepare our patients for dental implant treatment.
Choosing to get dental implants is the first step to the process, you have to meet the qualifications in order to move forward with treatment. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Andre Rossius, to find out if there were any preconditions that you must meet before you can have dental implants.
